"First Business" Interview: Lee Neubecker on Microsoft Office 2003

Microsoft Office 2003CHICAGO: October 27, 2003 - First Business, a daily program on WCIU-TV that provides highlights on up-to-date business and finance news, covers the release of Microsoft's widely anticipated Office 2003 suite. Touted as Microsoft's first complete application that directs the focus of computer security to all level of users, it provides interesting features, including one that boasts of emails and files that can automatically "self-destruct" after a certain period of time. With the new application, how documents are viewed can be controlled by the maker, for example, it can prevent the receiver from printing and forwarding the document or keeping the document past a specific duration (hence, the "self-destruct" claim). This security feature aims to protect sensitive information.

"There's been a major paradigm shift at Microsoft. Previously, they created products with the focus on trying to make the product easy to use. Now, there's been a demand to lock down their applications."

An interview with Lee Neubecker, President and CEO of Forensicon, a computer forensics and electronic discovery firm based in Chicago, delves into security issues that surround Microsoft's products. This past year alone, more than three dozen patches have been sent out by Microsoft, which left users wondering if Office 2003 will step up to the plate as the next generation application that centers its attention on security. Neubecker says, "There's been a major paradigm shift at Microsoft. Previously, they created products with the focus on trying to make the product easy to use. Now, there's been a demand to lock down their applications." When asked about the launch of Office 2003, Neubecker replies it is "a brilliant move by Microsoft."

When posed the question why the sudden major shift in focus, Neubecker offers: "The marketplace has woken up to the fact that security is important. Previously the market just cared about the lowest price and features, but with all the outbreaks of viruses ranging from SoBig to Blaster and so on cost companies a lot of money. As a result, they're demanding that Microsoft steps up their focus on security." And Office 2003 is Microsoft's first answer."
